Doorway to Nefertiti’s tomb, Abu Simbel, Egypt

Doors may be a barrier or an invitation. It depends how we see them, how brave or how curious we are. Even openings without doors can encourage or deter us from venturing further.

And in many ways they are like people’s faces –  hinting at what lies beyond or barring any approach. ‘Faces’ that echo splendours long past or simplicity that endures untold events.

Doors tell stories. I find them irresistible to photograph and rewarding to contemplate.

Whatever doors and openings do for you, I hope these inspire you in some way. The first five are from Italy.

Sometimes a door is not as secured against us as we think, once we examine it with more determination.

And at other times, we must take our courage in both hands and knock with all our might.
